I was fired the day of being notified that my rating was too low.
This wasn’t a huge surprise because orders in my area were very slow. I would only get two orders per week, unlike the thriving pandemic era.
Asking for customer ratings would have helped me raise my score, even though I wasn’t getting much action.
Customers tend to skip over rating you because they don’t see it as important, but it’s essential for your business.

Since getting hired as an Instacart shopper, I’ve found new ways to improve my ratings.
In the above photo, you can see that I pre-typed a question for my next customer.
This is convenient because all I have to do is open my Notes app, copy the text, and send the review request before delivering the order.
Place the customer’s name after the hello and bam! You’re on your way to becoming a 5-star shopper in no time!
Treat It Like A Business
When you deliver groceries, you’re completing a business transaction.
Being an independent contractor requires you to have an efficient system for satisfying clients.
Some ways that you can improve your quality of delivery include:
– Placing frozen items in insulated bags
– Separating perishables from non-perishables
– Communicating with your customers about replacements
– Being timely
– Getting familiar with different sections of the grocery store
– Checking expiration dates
– Making sure the item design matches product description

One thing that I didn’t realize, Shipt shopping is a form of business training.
Even if you’re a full-time employee whose only Shipt shopping on the side, you can learn a lot of valuable skills providing service.
Checking my tone of text, prioritizing quality(customers hate damaged items), and being punctual are valuable skills that can be used in other entrepreneurial pursuits.

3. Double Check Items
Even though I had a lot of experience under my belt, there were still times when I’d forget to add an item or would swap customers’ products accidentally.
One of the worst feelings is when you complete and order…only to have the customer send you an angry text.
Take it from me, it’s best to check your cart when you feel the most confident.
When shopping for multiple orders at once, I go-through the list and slow down to remember any extra requests.
Having a good rating should always be prioritized over delivery time.
Your customer will remember the quality and fulfillment of items more than quickness.
4. Stop Depending
I became a Shipt Shopper not too long before the 2020 pandemic.
Through the tough period, I made more money than I ever had before. Unfortunately, I wasn’t ready for it.
Even the stimulus check the government paid me ended up getting spent on food and petty items. Investing wasn’t in my financial vocabulary.

5. Deliver On Time
I’ve been there friend. You’re in the dairy section and Instagram tells you bae sent a DM.
OF COURSE, you respond. 5 minutes have now turned to 15.
When shopping, keeping track of time and trying your best to deliver early is essential.
Think about it, the sooner you finish the order, the faster you’ll get paid.
This is more for when you get used to shopping and want to slack off.
A lot of times, experienced shoppers don’t account for the time needed to drive and check out items, so they end up rushing.
Rushing can also lead to damaged or missing items, or worse…car accidents.
Make your life easier by practicing good time management.
6. Be A Robot
Not every customer experience is going to be friendly, sometimes you’ll grow frustrated with requests.
Maybe you’re shopping for a customer who keeps adding items, or talking to someone with an aggressive tone.
These are the moments that require deep breathing and a desire to focus on the bigger picture…a solution.
But how is one to calm down when going off seems valid?
Become a robot. Realize that to the customer, you are merely an avatar.
Chances are, they don’t personally know you.
Write down what you want your avatar(profile picture) to represent. When your customer communicates with you, these are the characteristics they should receive.
Ask yourself, what would chat GPT say? Then add your loving touch.
7. Put Eggs Upfront
Shopping for fragile items can be a challenge if you don’t have a lot of space in your car.
It’s best practice to place eggs and bread on the passenger seat floor.
This will help protect the eggs from damage.
You should always open the carton of eggs and check for damage before placing in your cart!
